Frequently Asked Questions

If you cannot find an answer to your question, please contact rajan@bwmedicalbilling.com.

Insurance coverage varies greatly, even within the same company. While we’ve worked with most major insurers, including United Healthcare, BCBS, Aetna, etc., each insurer can have hundreds or even thousands of different group policies. Every group policy has its own  unique benefits.

This means that two people using the same insurance company could have completely different coverage for homebirths, depending on their specific group policy.

To determine what your policy covers, we need to verify your benefits. We offer services at various price points here.

Before any major medical procedure, the provider conducts a verification of benefits call to have a thorough understanding off coverage, paperwork, and exceptions that may need to be made. Maternal care is considered a major medical procedure.

People often reach out to us after their reimbursement was lower than they anticipated or denied - by then, it's often too late.

It's important to ask the right questions and to understand how insurance reimburses claims for services.

If we conducted your verification of benefits or provided your superbill, we can definitely assist.

Unfortunately, if we were not involved in the process prior to your claim denial, we are not able to assist.

States with Corrective Actions

Some states have great protections in place

Some of the best are:

  • Washington
  • Oregon
  • New York
  • Colorado

Among other states, Texas and California are promising but do not have any corrective actions in place for provider discrimination.

Before purchasing our service, we recommend you take a look at the Medicaid Reimbursement Policy for your state. If Medicaid doesn't cover midwives in your state, it's not likely your insurance company will. does insurance cover homebirth

Navigating BCBSTX UT Select Insurance

With BCBSTX UT Select Insurance, it is possible to get a gap exception approved, and we've helped clients succeed in this process. However, it’s best to start as early as possible to allow enough time for any challenges that may come up along the way.

Key Considerations:

  • No Reimbursement for CPMs: UT Select often does not reimburse Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs), even at an out-of-network rate. However, a gap exception can make this possible.
  • Gap Exception Process: While UT Select can be difficult with gap exceptions, our experience has led to successful approvals with careful planning.
  • Recommended Timeline: We suggest beginning this process at least 3–5 months before your due date to ensure the best chance of approval.

If you're considering a gap exception, our team is here to guide you. Starting early will give you the best chance for success, but we’re ready to support you no matter where you are in your journey.

Disclaimer: Insurance policies and procedures are subject to change, and we always hope to find improvements have been made to the process. homebirth insurance coverage
